It all started with a Mustang…I was fresh out of college, starting my career, ogling cars I was resisting to buy, when one day the local Ford dealership got a used 2004 Saleen S289 SC. Of course I had to drool because the Mustang was one of my favorite cars. Not a few seconds later and a sales lady offered me a test drive. I accepted. 4.6 litres of supercharged goodness. I want.
I sat and pondered for about a week then we sat down, talked money and I contacted the bank. But since I had just started my career, no loan for me. But I had already made the decision to buy a fun car. A decisions that doesn’t come lightly or swiftly to me but once made, needed to be seen through. I had the itch. So I perused around for other cars: used, sporty and a manual transmission were my criteria. “Well we don’t really have anything you might be interested in.” said the sales man, “Wait, no we just got a 2006 Miata a few days ago, do you want to look at that?” This is when Ruby entered my life.
“A Miata?” I thought, “I don’t know, that’s a girl’s cars and a convertible, I’m not sure I want to mess with this… But you have nothing else, so what the heck, lets drive it,” I said. And we walked to the garage. She was still dirty and dusty as they hadn’t even given her the show floor detailing yet. We got in and I drove to the driveway, put my foot down around the corner for all 6000 RPM, slammed her into second and I knew this was going to be my car.
I have enjoyed the last 4 years with Ruby, adding some bolt-on mods and traveling around. Then I discovered the Moss Motoring Challenge and instantly new this was for me. My fiancee and I had a blast the last year participating and are excited to participate in 2015. We had some fun adventures and saw some sights that we normally would not have seen.
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I had ended up getting that Saleen. But then I think about all the fun I have had with Ruby that I would have missed with the mustang, and I care no more.
