Me and My Maggie

A couple of weeks ago, I was all set to round up a few more Challenge points. End the race to the finish on an up note. A city starting with an “E”, a laboratory, firetrucks, and a Christmas parade were on the agenda for that afternoon and into the evening. Maggie, my 73 TR6, had other ideas. Guess she was all wore out from all her travels this year…well, at least her clutch was. So it was on to Euless for the annual Christmas parade in Rose, our 52 Triumph Renown Limo. There was the flat tire on the way home…but that is a whole other story.

Although starting the challenge three months into the year, we made the most of the months left. And I will be the first to admit that a lot of the miles we rolled up on my car were a direct result of taking the Moss Challenge. Maggie isn’t really our show car, so most of those were reserved for Rose. But for just driving…well that’s where Miss Maggie shines. After adding an overdrive transmission last year, she was ready for her time on the road.

March saw a trip to New Orleans with a drive through the French Quarter and around to a few of the infamous cemeteries. What an amazing city with lots of the destination points. We even found the Moss Street entrance.

In April we attended the Kastner Cup event and took a few laps around the track. I even have a Moss Motor Challenge Guide signed by Kas Kastner. He did look at me a little strangely when I asked for it to be signed, but what the heck.

Come September, we made the trek to North Carolina to attend the VTR National Convention. One of the best parts was driving my TR6 nearly 1400 miles…all by myself. Following my husband in his truck, we were also picking up a new trailer in Fitzgerald, Georgia. You can’t imagine the number of photo opportunities…some captured, a lot missed. That’s just the way it sometimes goes. We did, however, stay in an amazing home (with a barn) on 2,500 acres where a movie had just been filmed. A pond with trout, hills for hiking, cows and a donkey…definitely my idea of heaven.

October brought our Red River Shoot Out and a trip to the scenic (and slightly smelly) city of Sulphur, OK. What a wealth of points were found there. Fall colors, perfect top-down weather, and a deceased fuel pump near the end of the rally…who could ask for more?

In between our big events, were the local drives and rallies. We host a Turkey Trot rally in November, and this year lot of our clue runs were in Miss Maggie. There were trips to Pottsboro where we will be hosting our next big event. Fink, Keeter, Dorchester…who knew there was such a wealth of unusually named cities so close to home? And we actually met the winner of last year’s challenge, Bryan Hutchinson, the driver of a 1973 MGB named “Maggie” at a brewery in Justin. What a coincidence! Just think about it…both cars are 73’s and even have same name!

So sorry to see this year come to an end. There were so many more cities, counties, states and destinations to be seen and captured on film. However, once the fuel pump is rebuilt and the clutch fixed, I do believe I’ll hear the 2015 Challenge knocking on my door

PS…I was going to make a nice clean copy of the Motoring Challenge Guide to send in, but decided that the one that went everywhere with us should go. It is a little rough, but it was run over by an SUV on our way to Sulphur and still survived.
